Cookie Policy
Last updated: October 16, 2026
Cookies and Local Storage are activated and used during your browsing on this site. Cookies are small text files, usually numbers and letters, that do not create a security risk for your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Local Storage is a similar mechanism used to store data, such as UTM tags, directly in your browser.
This Cookie Policy explains which cookies and similar technologies we use on thingsboard.io, why, and how you can control them. How we handle the personal data collected through them is described in our Privacy Policy.
Cookies allow us to:
- Understand the behavior of visitors, measure the number of visits and page views using Google Analytics;
- Understand how visitors interact with our pages, using session recordings and heatmaps from Microsoft Clarity;
- Measure which of our advertising campaigns bring visitors to the site, using Google Ads, LinkedIn and Meta advertising tags, and the campaign parameters (UTM tags) or the partner reference (FirstPromoter) stored in your browser's Local Storage when you arrive from one of our campaigns or partner links; we pass these parameters on to our License Portal, ThingsBoard Cloud and our CRM together with your registration or contact request, so we know which campaign or partner it came from;
- Improve load-balancing and page load speed using Cloudflare;
- Search the site using Google Programmable Search Engine. It loads only after you allow External media in the cookie banner or press "Load Google search" on the search page; Google then sets its own cookies, including the NID advertising cookie, and may show ads in the results;
- Show videos embedded from YouTube. Until you click a video, the page shows only a preview image from our own domain and nothing is sent to YouTube or Google. When you play it, the video loads from youtube-nocookie.com and YouTube (Google) sets cookies on its own domain;
- Provide the website support chat through YourGPT, which stores the state of the chat in your browser's Local Storage. The chat widget is loaded only when you click the chat button (bottom right).
Only strictly necessary cookies are set by default. Analytics, marketing and external-media cookies are set only after you allow them in the cookie banner, and you can change your choice at any time via in the site footer, or delete cookies in your browser settings as described below.
Your choice is stored for 180 days in the tb_consent cookie, together with the time you made it; after that, or if you clear your cookies, the banner is shown again. Until you allow a category, the tools in that category are not loaded at all: no script runs, no cookie is set and nothing is sent to the provider. If you reject a category or withdraw your consent later, the cookies and browser storage of that category on thingsboard.io are deleted at once; cookies set by Google or YouTube on their own domains can only be removed in your browser settings or your Google account. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a refusal of Marketing cookies.
You may also configure your browser to alert you each time cookies are created. It is also possible to prevent their installation or delete cookies already set. Here is the procedure to follow on the three main browsers:
- Chrome instructions;
- Firefox instructions;
- Safari instructions.
You can also opt out of Google Analytics on all websites with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on and manage Google's advertising cookies at adssettings.google.com.
Access to our site will not be denied if you disable cookies, but some features may not work.
Cookies and similar technologies we use
One row per provider. Each provider's own list is linked for cookies it may set on its own domain, which we do not control.
| Provider | Category | What it stores and why | Name(s) | Duration | More |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ThingsBoard | Strictly necessary | Your choice in the cookie banner and, in Local Storage, the ThingsBoard Cloud region (Europe or North America) you last chose for sign-in or on the pricing page, and your preferences on this site: theme, the code-example tab you picked in the documentation, notices you closed, tutorial progress, that you already sent feedback on a documentation page, and the address of your own instance if you entered one for an IoT Hub item. In Session Storage, for the current tab only: the state of the documentation sidebar, case-study filters and the IoT Hub page you came from. | tb_consent; tb.site.lastSigninRegion and preference keys in Local Storage; sl-sidebar-state and page-state keys in Session Storage | 180 days; until you clear your browser data; Session Storage until you close the tab | - |
| Google Analytics | Analytics | Distinguishes visitors and keeps the state of a visit, so we can count visits and page views. If you allowed Analytics cookies, our contact forms also send the Google Analytics client ID with your message, so that we can connect your request with how you found us. With Analytics consent, Google Analytics also sends cookieless, non-personalised measurement signals to Google Ads; no advertising cookies are set and no personalised ads result from this. | _ga; _ga_PMZCBFYH5Y | Up to 2 years (browsers may cap it at 400 days) | Google's cookie page; opt-out add-on |
| Microsoft Clarity | Analytics | Records how pages are used (session recordings, heatmaps), so we can see where visitors get stuck. Typed text is masked before it leaves your browser. _clck and _clsk are set on thingsboard.io and are deleted if you withdraw Analytics; the others are set by Microsoft on its own domains (clarity.ms, bing.com) and can only be removed in your browser settings. | _clck; _clsk (thingsboard.io); CLID; MUID; ANONCHK; SM; MR (Microsoft domains) | _clck up to 1 year; _clsk 1 day; Microsoft-domain cookies: see Microsoft's list | Microsoft Clarity cookie list |
| Google Ads | Marketing | Stores the identifier of an ad click that brought you to the site, so a later sign-up can be attributed to the campaign. Google may set further cookies on its own domains (google.com, doubleclick.net). | _gcl_au; _gcl_ls (Local Storage) | 90 days | Google advertising cookies; adssettings.google.com |
| Marketing | Measures the results of our LinkedIn campaigns. LinkedIn may set further cookies on its own domain. | li_fat_id and others | 30 days to 1 year, see LinkedIn's table | LinkedIn cookie table | |
| Meta | Marketing | Measures the results of our Meta campaigns. | _fbp; _fbc | See Meta's policy | Meta Cookies Policy |
| ThingsBoard (campaign and partner parameters) | Marketing | The UTM parameters of the campaign link, or the partner reference of the FirstPromoter affiliate link, you arrived from, kept in Local Storage so a later contact or registration can be attributed to that campaign or partner. | utm (one entry with utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content); fpr (Local Storage) | Until you withdraw your Marketing consent, it expires after 180 days, or you clear your browser data | - |
| Google Programmable Search (site search) | External media | Nothing is loaded until you allow External media or press "Load Google search" on the search page. Then, as soon as you open the search, Google's search script and its advertising script load; what you type is sent to Google as you type, to suggest queries; when you search, Google sets cookies on google.com for search preferences and advertising, and its search code sets one advertising cookie on thingsboard.io, which we delete if you withdraw External media. | NID; SEARCH_SAMESITE; __Secure-STRP (google.com); __gsas (thingsboard.io) | 6 months; __gsas see Google's list | Google's cookie page |
| YouTube (embedded videos) | Loaded when you play a video | Until you click a video, the page shows a preview image from our domain and contacts neither YouTube nor Google. When you play it, the video loads from youtube-nocookie.com and YouTube receives your IP address and our domain, and sets cookies on its own domain. | VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE; __Secure-YNID; VISITOR_PRIVACY_METADATA; __Secure-ROLLOUT_TOKEN; YSC (youtube.com) | 180 days; YSC until you close the browser | Google's cookie page; Google Privacy Policy |
| YourGPT | Strictly necessary | The state of the chat widget: a visitor identifier, your language and, once you start a chat, the chat session. Nothing is stored until you click the chat button. When you open the chat, it loads its fonts from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com), so your IP address is sent to Google. | ygc-chatbot-<id>, lastActiveTime (Local Storage); widget_instance_<id>, timeSpent (Session Storage) | Until you clear your browser data; session keys until you close the tab | YourGPT privacy page |
