Who it’s for

Process engineers, plant operators, and maintenance technicians ask “how long has this pipeline been in each flow operating band over the shift or day?” They need a chart that shows not just current flow but the time spent in each zone.

What it does

A device reporting flowRate = 22 m³/hr renders a time-series area chart overlaid on horizontal color bands: blue for Low (below 10 m³/hr), green for Normal (10–30 m³/hr), orange for Elevated (30–50 m³/hr), and red for High (above 50 m³/hr). The chart background is divided into these zones so operators can instantly see which operating band the flow rate occupies at any point in time. A data zoom slider lets operators examine any sub-period in detail.

  • Color-banded area chart shows flow rate trend against operating zone boundaries simultaneously
  • Data zoom slider lets operators focus on any time window — a full shift, a process transition, or a specific incident
  • Shows one sensor’s data per widget; add multiple widgets to monitor different pipes or pumps side by side

How to set up

Data keys

KeyRoleTypeDescription
flowRateChart seriesTimeseriesFlow rate in m³/hr; change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key

The widget ships with a simulated function datasource key labeled Flow rate, so it draws random values until you point the datasource at a device and rename the key.

To point it at your own device: open the dashboard in edit mode, open the widget’s Datasources, pick the entity or entity alias, and replace the function key with the key your device reports.

How to customize

  • To change the operating thresholds — open the widget settings and adjust the band boundaries.
  • To change the band colors — edit the color for each operating band in the widget settings.
  • To change the units — change the Units field in the widget settings to match your flow meter’s output.

Tips

  • Use the data zoom slider to isolate a batch run and confirm that flow stayed within the Normal band throughout the production window.
  • A line that repeatedly dips into the Low band during a shift is a sign of intermittent issues such as air pockets, partial blockages, or pump cavitation — zoom in to find the exact timestamps.
  • Pair with a fluid pressure range chart on the same row to see whether flow dips align with pressure spikes, which can indicate valve-related restrictions.
