Horizontal snow depth card
Who it’s for
City road maintenance crews, ski resort operators, and avalanche risk assessors ask “how deep is the snow right now?” They need the same at-a-glance reading as a standard card but in a compact horizontal format that slots into tight dashboard layouts.
What it does
A sensor reading 22 cm shows a dark-blue icon and value — Moderate — in a horizontal strip that takes up less vertical space than a square card. The same card shows light blue at 0 cm — Trace — and orange at 72 cm — Very Deep.
- Color-coded icon and value across six snow-depth bands from Trace to Extreme
- Horizontal layout with the icon and label on the left and the value on the right — fits narrow columns and metric-row dashboards
- Last-updated timestamp showing how long ago the reading arrived
- Shows one sensor’s data; it does not chart accumulation trends or compare multiple gauges
How to set up
Data keys
| Key | Role | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
snow | Main value | Timeseries | Snow depth in cm; change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key |
The widget ships with a simulated function datasource key labeled Snow depth, so it draws random values until you point the datasource at a device and rename the key.
To point it at your own device: open the dashboard in edit mode, open the widget’s Datasources, pick the entity or entity alias, and replace the function key with the key your device reports.
The card shows the value in cm with no decimal places. If the key has never reported, the card displays the label and icon with an empty value, not an error.
Value ranges
| Range (cm) | Level | Color |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 | Trace | Light Blue |
| 1–10 | Light | Medium Blue |
| 10–30 | Moderate | Dark Blue |
| 30–60 | Deep | Deep Blue |
| 60–90 | Very Deep | Orange |
| 90+ | Extreme | Red |
How to customize
- To use your own snow-depth thresholds — edit Icon color ranges and Value color ranges; set the same boundaries in both so the icon and the number always agree.
- To change the icon — set Icon to any Material or MDI icon name.
- To hide the label, icon, or timestamp — turn off Show label, Show icon, or Show date.
- To switch to an absolute timestamp — turn off Last update ago in the date format settings.
- To match your dashboard’s fonts — set Value font and Label font.
Tips
- Keep Icon color ranges and Value color ranges on the same boundaries so the icon and the number always show the same band.
- This layout works well alongside temperature and wind speed horizontal cards in a winter weather summary row — together they immediately indicate whether road-treatment or slope-closure thresholds have been reached.
- Place snow depth next to a rainfall horizontal card when distinguishing between wet snowfall and rain-on-snow events that accelerate avalanche risk.
