Who it’s for

Outdoor event organizers, wind energy operators, and smart farming teams ask “how strong is the wind right now?” They need the same at-a-glance reading as a standard card but in a compact horizontal format that slots into tight dashboard layouts.

What it does

A sensor reading 12.5 m/s shows a deep blue icon and value — Fresh — in a horizontal strip that takes up less vertical space than a square card. The same card shows light blue at 0.1 m/s — Calm — and dark red at 28 m/s — Storm.

  • Color-coded icon and value across seven Beaufort-inspired bands from Calm to Storm
  • Horizontal layout with the icon and label on the left and the value on the right — fits narrow columns and metric-row dashboards
  • Last-updated timestamp showing how long ago the reading arrived
  • Shows one sensor’s data; it does not chart wind trends, show wind direction, or compare multiple sensors

How to set up

Data keys

KeyRoleTypeDescription
speedMain valueTimeseriesWind speed (m/s); change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key

The widget ships with a simulated function datasource key labeled Wind Speed, so it draws random values until you point the datasource at a device and rename the key.

To point it at your own device: open the dashboard in edit mode, open the widget’s Datasources, pick the entity or entity alias, and replace the function key with the key your device reports.

The card shows the value with one decimal place. If the key has never reported, the card displays the label and icon with an empty value, not an error.

How to customize

  • To use your own wind thresholds — edit Icon color ranges and Value color ranges; set the same boundaries in both so the icon and the number always agree.
  • To change the icon — set Icon to any Material or MDI icon name.
  • To hide the label, icon, or timestamp — turn off Show label, Show icon, or Show date.
  • To switch to an absolute timestamp — turn off Last update ago in the date format settings.
  • To match your dashboard’s fonts — set Value font and Label font.

Tips

  • The seven bands align broadly with the Beaufort wind scale; Strong (≥ 17.2 m/s, Beaufort 7) is the common threshold for halting outdoor crane operations, and Storm (≥ 24.5 m/s, Beaufort 10) triggers structural-risk alerts for tall cranes and masts.
  • This layout works well alongside temperature, humidity, and rainfall horizontal cards in an outdoor conditions row — together they immediately convey whether it is a safe day for outdoor work.
  • Wind speed is typically averaged over 10 minutes for operational decisions; single-sample readings can be significantly higher than the mean during gusts, so consider the sensor’s averaging interval when setting alert thresholds.
