Rotational speed chart card
Who it’s for
Maintenance engineers, machine operators, and plant supervisors ask “what is the speed trend for this motor, what is the RPM right now, and how much has it changed?” They need a chart that shows current value, direction, and delta in a single card.
What it does
A device reporting rotationalSpeed = 1200 RPM renders a time-series trend line alongside the current value, a percentage delta from the previous period, and an absolute delta. The chart and values are color-coded by operating level: blue for Low (below 500 RPM), green for Normal (500–1500 RPM), orange for Elevated (1500–3000 RPM), and red for High (above 3000 RPM).
- Time-series trend chart shows whether rotational speed is stable, rising, or declining
- Live speed reading in RPM with color coding across four operating bands
- Delta percentage and absolute delta quantify how much speed has changed from the previous period
- Shows one asset’s data per widget; add multiple widgets to monitor different motors or drives side by side
How to set up
Data keys
| Key | Role | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
rotationalSpeed | Chart series | Timeseries | Rotational speed in RPM; change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key |
| Latest | Latest value | Timeseries | The headline figure above the chart. Its own color ranges are where the band colors are edited |
| Delta percent | Percentage change | Timeseries | Change against the previous period, as a percentage |
| Delta absolute | Absolute change | Timeseries | Change against the previous period, in the key’s own unit |
The widget ships with a simulated function datasource key labeled Rotational speed, so it draws random values until you point the datasource at a device and rename the key.
To point it at your own device: open the dashboard in edit mode, open the widget’s Datasources, pick the entity or entity alias, and replace the function key with the key your device reports.
How to customize
- To change the operating thresholds — edit the color ranges on the Latest data key to match your machine’s rated speed range.
- To change the chart colors — edit the color of each range on the Latest data key.
- To rename the units label — change the Units field in the widget settings if needed.
Tips
- A rising trend approaching the Elevated band indicates the machine is being driven above its design point — investigate the load or drive setpoint before the speed enters the red zone.
- Use the delta to distinguish a controlled speed ramp (gradual positive delta over multiple readings) from a sudden overspeed event (large positive delta in one reading): the latter warrants immediate investigation.
- Pair with a vibration chart card on the same row to see whether speed changes correlate with vibration changes, which can indicate resonance conditions at specific RPM ranges.
