Unread notifications

Who it’s for

Anyone who works inside a dashboard all day and should not have to leave it to find out that something needs attention. The widget puts the platform’s notification inbox on the board itself, so an operator sees a new alert where they are already looking.

What it does

The Unread notifications widget lists the current user’s unread platform notifications and lets them be filtered, read and cleared without leaving the dashboard. Six notifications are shown by default, with a counter in the widget title, a type filter, a Mark all as read action and a View all link into the full inbox.

• Notifications arrive where the work happens, rather than behind a bell icon on another screen.
• The list is per viewer — each user sees their own unread items from one widget configuration.
• A type filter narrows a busy inbox to the category being watched, which keeps a rollout announcement from burying an alarm.
• Mark all as read and View all are individually switchable, so a read-only wall display can show the list without offering actions nobody is there to take.
• The counter is styled independently and appears in the widget title, which means the title has to be enabled for the count to show at all.
• The Unread notifications widget shows platform notifications, not alarms: an alarm list belongs on the Alarms table, and an alarm total on the Alarm count card.

How to set up

Data keys

The Unread notifications widget takes no datasource and no data keys — it reads the signed-in user’s notification inbox. The default configuration carries a leftover demo datasource, which can be removed.

Enable the widget title if the counter matters — the count is drawn in the title bar, so a widget configured without a title shows the list but never the number.

How to customize

• To fit a taller or shorter tile — change Maximum notifications to display so the list ends cleanly instead of being cut off.
• To make the widget read-only — turn off Mark all as read and View all, which suits a shared wall display where no one is signed in as themselves.
• To simplify a quiet inbox — turn off Type filter when there is only ever one kind of notification.
• To restyle the count — set the counter’s Value font and color, and its background color.

Tips

• Size the list to the tile rather than to the inbox. A widget set to twenty notifications in a six-row space hides the actions below the fold, and the actions are the reason the list is on the dashboard rather than in the bell menu.
• Keep the type filter on for anyone who receives both operational alerts and platform announcements. Without it, a quiet week of announcements is enough to push the one message that mattered off the visible list.
