Wind speed card with background
Who it’s for
Outdoor event organizers, wind energy operators, and smart farming teams ask “how strong is the wind right now?” They use these cards on field station or control room screens where a background image gives the card a polished look.
What it does
A sensor reading 12.5 m/s shows a deep blue value — Fresh — over the preset background image. The same card shows light blue at 0.1 m/s — Calm — and dark red at 28 m/s — Storm.
- Large current wind speed value color-coded across seven Beaufort-inspired bands from Calm to Storm
- Color-coded icon matching the value band so the status is visible at a glance
- Decorative background image bundled with the widget, with a white overlay that keeps the text readable
- Last-updated timestamp showing how long ago the reading arrived
- Shows one sensor’s data; it does not chart wind trends, show wind direction, or compare multiple sensors
How to set up
Data keys
| Key | Role | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
speed | Main value | Timeseries | Wind speed (m/s); change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key |
The widget ships with a simulated function datasource key labeled Wind Speed, so it draws random values until you point the datasource at a device and rename the key.
To point it at your own device: open the dashboard in edit mode, open the widget’s Datasources, pick the entity or entity alias, and replace the function key with the key your device reports.
The card shows the value with one decimal place. If the key has never reported, the card displays the label and icon with an empty value, not an error.
Value ranges
| Range (m/s) | Level | Color |
|---|---|---|
| 0–0.2 | Calm | Light Blue |
| 0.2–3.4 | Light | Blue |
| 3.4–8 | Gentle | Medium Blue |
| 8–10.8 | Moderate | Dark Blue |
| 10.8–17.2 | Fresh | Deep Blue |
| 17.2–24.5 | Strong | Red |
| 24.5+ | Storm | Dark Red |
How to customize
- To swap the background image — open the widget settings and set Background to a different image or switch to a solid color.
- To adjust how much the background shows through — change the Overlay opacity; lower values reveal more of the image, higher values push it further back.
- To use your own wind thresholds — edit Icon color ranges and Value color ranges; set the same boundaries in both so the icon and the number always agree.
- To change the icon — set Icon to any Material or MDI icon name.
- To hide the label, icon, or timestamp — turn off Show label, Show icon, or Show date.
- To match your dashboard’s fonts — set Value font and Label font.
Tips
- The seven bands align broadly with the Beaufort wind scale; Strong (≥ 17.2 m/s, Beaufort 7) is the common threshold for halting outdoor crane operations, and Storm (≥ 24.5 m/s, Beaufort 10) triggers structural-risk alerts for tall cranes and communication masts.
- If the background image reduces contrast, raise the Overlay opacity to keep the text readable from a distance.
- Pair with a rainfall card: strong wind combined with heavy rain significantly increases wind-chill and drainage loads — together they tell a more complete outdoor safety story than either metric alone.
