Who it’s for

Indoor air quality managers, building managers, and health and safety officers ask “is the VOC level in this space currently within safe limits?” They monitor volatile organic compounds continuously to protect occupants from off-gassing from furniture, cleaning products, paints, and adhesives.

What it does

A sensor reporting voc = 320 ppb displays the reading on a color-coded card: green for Good (0–500 ppb), orange for Moderate (500–1000 ppb), and red for Hazardous (above 1000 ppb).

  • Live VOC reading in ppb with automatic color coding across three severity bands
  • Severity bands reflect typical indoor air quality guidelines for total VOC exposure
  • Shows one sensor’s reading per widget; add multiple widgets to monitor different rooms or zones

How to set up

Data keys

KeyRoleTypeDescription
vocMain valueTimeseriesVOC concentration in ppb; change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key

The widget ships with a simulated function datasource key labeled VOCs, so it draws random values until you point the datasource at a device and rename the key.

To point it at your own device: open the dashboard in edit mode, open the widget’s Datasources, pick the entity or entity alias, and replace the function key with the key your device reports.

Value ranges

RangeLevelColor
0–500GoodGreen
500–1000ModerateOrange
1000+HazardousRed

How to customize

  • To change the severity thresholds — edit Icon color ranges and Value color ranges; set the same boundaries in both so the icon and the number always agree.
  • To change the band colors — edit the color of each range in Icon color ranges and Value color ranges.
  • To rename the units label — change the Units field in the widget settings if your sensor reports in µg/m³.

Tips

  • VOC concentrations spike immediately after painting, cleaning, or installing new furniture; monitoring in the hours following such activities lets facilities staff confirm that ventilation has reduced levels to safe limits before occupants return.
  • In newly constructed or renovated spaces, VOC off-gassing from materials can persist for weeks at elevated levels; a sustained Moderate or Hazardous reading over several days indicates more aggressive ventilation or source removal is needed.
  • For health and safety compliance, log peak and 8-hour average readings alongside the activities carried out in the space that day so incident reports can correlate cause and effect.
