Who it’s for

Outdoor event organizers, wind energy operators, and smart farming teams ask “how strong is the wind and which way is it blowing right now?” They need both pieces of information together — speed alone is not enough when the wind direction determines whether a sprayer drift, wildfire spread, or turbine yaw adjustment is needed.

What it does

A sensor reading 12.5 m/s from the southwest shows a deep blue speed value — Fresh — alongside a directional arrow pointing southwest on a compass rose. The speed band changes color as the reading climbs through the seven bands from Calm to Storm.

  • Color-coded wind speed value across seven Beaufort-inspired bands from Calm to Storm
  • Compass rose with directional arrow rotating to the bearing reported by the wind direction sensor
  • Last-updated timestamp showing how long ago the reading arrived
  • Shows one sensor pair’s data; it does not chart trends or compare multiple stations

How to set up

Data keys

KeyRoleTypeDescription
directionDirectionTimeseriesWind bearing in degrees (0–360, meteorological convention: the direction FROM which the wind blows); change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key
speedSpeedTimeseriesWind speed (m/s); change the key name to match your device’s telemetry key

The widget ships with simulated function datasource keys labeled Wind Direction and Wind Speed, so it draws random values until you point the datasource at a device and rename the keys.

To point it at your own device: open the dashboard in edit mode, open the widget’s Datasources, pick the entity or entity alias, and replace the function key with the key your device reports.

If either key has never reported, the compass arrow is absent or the speed value is empty.

How to customize

  • To use your own wind speed thresholds — edit the color ranges on the speed data key; adjust the seven default bands to match your operational or safety thresholds.
  • To hide the timestamp — turn off Show date.
  • To match your dashboard’s fonts — set the font options under the speed data key’s appearance settings.

Tips

  • Wind direction follows meteorological convention: 0° / 360° means the wind is blowing FROM the north (toward the south), 90° FROM the east, 270° FROM the west. The arrow on the compass points in the direction the wind is coming from.
  • The seven speed bands align broadly with the Beaufort wind scale; Strong (≥ 17.2 m/s, Beaufort 7) is the common threshold for halting outdoor crane operations, and Storm (≥ 24.5 m/s, Beaufort 10) triggers structural-risk alerts for tall cranes and masts.
  • Pair with a rainfall card: a southwesterly at Fresh strength combined with heavy rain creates very different outdoor conditions than a northerly calm — direction context turns a wind speed reading into an actionable forecast.
